Mijn R209/2/B militaire radio-ontvanger / My R209/2/B military radio receiver.
Deze keer niet een ontvanger van het museum, maar die van mijzelf thuis. Dit type ontvanger is door het radioverkenningsbataljon in Gorinchem niet gebruikt. Zover ik weet is dit type ontvanger ook niet elders specifiek voor radio-interceptie ingezet. Hij is wel door de Nederlandse Landmacht gebruikt en een hele leuke en bruikbare ontvanger voor de radiohobbyist (luisteramateur).
This time not a receiver from the museum, but my privately owned and used R209/2/B receiver.
This receiver was not used by the Radio Reconnaissance Battalion in Gorinchem and also not for specific radio intercept duties elswere, as far as I know. The receiver was used by the Dutch Army. This is a very nice and usefull receiver for the radio enthousiast, worthwile to get some attention on this site.
Dit is een ontvanger voor algemeen gebruik, maar werd ook gezien als de opvolger van ontvanger R109, die gezamenlijk gebruikt werd met de wireless transmitter no. 76 als radio set no. 76, Zie de site van PA0PDZ. De R109 werd geproduceerd vanaf 1942, voornamelijk door Mullard Equipment Ltd, maar ook door andere bedrijven in licentie. Mullard was al sinds 1927 een volle dochter van Philips. Het eerste type R209, de R209 MK I werkte op een voedingsspannig van 6VDC (auto accu), de opvolger MK II op 12VDC (auto accu) en de /2/B op 12VDC, of 24VDC, of 115VAC, of 220VAC.
This is a general purpose receiver, but was also seen as the successor of the receiver R109, that was used together with wireless transmitter no. 76, as wireless set no. 76. See also the site of PA0PDZ. The R109 was produced as off 1942, mainly by Mullard Equipment Ltd, but also under license by other compagnies. Since 1927 Mullard was a full daughter compagny of Philips in the Netherlands. The first type R209, the MK I worked on 6VDC (car battery), the second type MK II worked on 12VDC (car battery) and the last type /2/B was universal, working on 12VDC, 24VDC, 115VAC and 220VAC.
De R209 heeft een stevige chassis, waterdichte behuizing en is van binnen netjes en modulair opgebouwd. De onderdelen, bedrading en soldeerwerk zijn ook van goede kwaliteit. The R209 has a very sturdy chassis and watertight housing. On the inside it has a neat modulair arrangement. The parts, wiring and soldering are also of good quality.
De wireless set no. 76 werd o.a. gebruikt bij de slag om Arnhem (een brug te ver), waarbij de verbindingsdienst faalde om hiermee een verbinding met de operationele leiding in Engeland tot stand te brengen. De zender werkte met kristalkanalen en waarschijnlijk had men de apparatuur van de verkeerde kristalen voorzien. Maar ook de gekozen frequentieband en gebruikte antennes gaven geen garantie op verbinding over die afstand.
The wireless set no. 76 was also used in the Battle of Arnhem, or operation Market Garden (a bridge too far). Then the men of the signal core did not succeed to make radio contact with the operational head quarters. However this was not the equipment at fault. The transmitter worked with changable chrystal controlled channels and they problably fitted the wrong ones for this operation. And also due to the used frequency band and type of antennae, the radio path over that particulair distance was not a sure one either.

Ik heb deze ontvanger 44 jaar. Ik ben hier als luisteramateur mee begonnen, voordat ik zendamateursexamen deed en heb hem daarna regelmatig gebruikt tot nu toe. Ook in het veld op zomerkampen en andere activiteiten van de Scouting. Al die tijd is de ontvanger prima blijven werken tot op een keer een defecte trilleromvormer in de voeding na, waarvan het bekend is, dat dit soort onderdelen een beperkte levensduur hebben. Dus ik kan uit ervaring zeggen dat de R209 een zeer degelijk apparaat is. Het pleit ook voor de kwaliteit van de radiobuizen van Mullard en Philips.
I have this receiver now for 44 years. I started as Short Wave Listener (SWL) with this receiver, before I took the radio amateur exam and became a licenced radio amateur. But even after that I used the receiver frequently, also on summer camps ant other activities with the Boy Scouts. Al that time the receiver worked fine. Only one time the vibrator unit appeared to be defect, but it, that this part has a limited life time. So out of my own experience I can say that the R209 is a very sturdy piece of equipment. And it proves also the very good quality of the Mullard and Philips radio valves.

De is R209 aan het einde van WO2 geproduceerd en gedurende de jaren vijftig en zestig gebruikt, o.a. in de “tentacle” verbindingsvoertuigen voor luchtsteunverbindingen. O.a. in het Nederlandse legerkamp La Courtine in Frankrijk, waar schijnbaar samen met de luchtmacht werd geoefend.
The R209 was produced at the end of WW2 and was used by the Dutch army during the fifties and sixties, for examble in ground to air communication trucks, at exercizes with the airforce conducted in the Dutch exercize camp La Courtine in France.

Wanneer de ontvanger op een accu wordt aangesloten maakt de trilleromvormer van die gelijkstroom wisselstroom, waardoor de transformator dit kan optransformeren naar de hoge spanning waar de radiobuizen mee kunnen werken. De R209/2/B is een mooi apparaat gemaakt met de stand der techniek van het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog en prettig om mee te werken.
The R209/2/B is a very nice piece of equipment, made with the technical capabilities as they were at the end of WW2. It is a pleasure to work with.
